MANI Interview about his project «#281″ 23-03-2021

Street Art piece that has modified the urban space: #281

Location : Barcelone, FR

Year : 2019

1- If you had to choose a Street Art piece that you created, as a transformation of the urban space, which one would you choose? How does this Street Art piece denote urban space metamorphosis?

This fresco is a bit special because of its support. It was performed on a persiana in the center of Gracia, Barcelona. It was about transforming an old rusty iron curtain into a dynamic work of art, I found this challenge exciting.

2- Why did you make this Street Art piece in this urban space? Was it the town hall or the property owner who authorized or asked you to create it? Can we consider this work as illegal/vandalism or legal, what is your criteria?

I was first drawn to street art simply as an audience, before finding myself drawn into it. One day at a festival, I had the opportunity to draw on a chalk wall for fun, and I found that my graphic universe worked very well on a larger scale.
So I set out to find a technique that would allow me to rediscover the “drawing” aspect of the ballpoint pen, but on larger media. I liked the more immersive aspect of the street right away, so I turned to rubbed Indian ink for collages and frescoes.

3- What is the message you want to communicate through this Street Art piece? Is it related to the urban space where you did it?

Each work depends on my mood, the questions that run through my head or my feelings on a particular subject. I will then look for the medium that best corresponds to the subject treated (a painting, a fresco or the street …)
I mainly use the street to suggest that the public identify with my characters by wearing them on a human scale. Then I look for walls that match the dynamics of the staging (a climb, a pedestrian corner or close to a guardrail, etc.)

The simple fact of pasting a work in the street modifies the feelings of passers-by, and can undoubtedly influence their daily life and their day. Through my collages, I especially hope to modify Les Urbains more than their Space.

4- How was this work integrated into the urban space? What was the interaction that the inhabitants of this city had with your project? Did they participate in its creation?

The inhabitants could see the realization of the work as it went, as it took me 5 days to complete it. I had the opportunity to speak with some curious and interested locals.

5- Do you think it is important that the local people participate during the production of your work and that they become artists modifying the urban space or do you prefer to carry out your projects alone without anyone seeing you?

I prefer to be alone in the realization of my works, it remains a personal and introspective work above all.

6- According to you, what is the criteria that determines your Street Art work modifies the urban space and why is your work considered aesthetically well done?

Well, I don’t think street art works any different from other artistic creations. I like to find high standards and consistency there, especially between substance and form. I always try that my proposals speak as much to the senses of passers-by as to their minds.

7-What is the “historical future” of your work? Should we take care of it, preserve it and repaint it as if it were a museum’s piece of art? Or should it be allowed to age with the city itself?

For me, if a work is in the street, it must age with the street, evolve with it. It is delusional to seek eternity in a work (even in a museum) then even more in the street. Life and beauty are fleeting, and street art is there to remind us of it!

8- How does your work add value to the urban space in which it is produced?

Bringing a little change and reflection in people’s daily lives is already very valuable to me.

9- What were the difficulties that you encountered during the completion of your work modifying the urban space?

In the specific case of this fresco, the support (in rusty and corrugated metal) was a real ordeal, because I had to recreate an optical illusion to make the lines appear straight while they are all curved. Which made me spend more time than I expected on directing.

10- Why is urban art important to modify the urban space? What sort of projects are you planning to do in the future ?

I do a lot of collages in the street, it’s faster and therefore more effective against the illegal aspect. But I would really like to develop my work as a muralist more. As it takes longer, I can only do this on legal projects. So I am looking for the future to make frescoes on authorized walls (festivals or associations).
