EJSMONDT Interview – 7- 06-2021

1- How do you define yourself? How do you define your projects?

I try not to define and confine my works to just a bunch of words, I believe it’s not for me to do. However, if I have to describe myself somehow, I’d say op artist working in public space.

2- How did you start working on street art?

For me, it was a long and complicated process that’s hard to put into words. Different circumstances and people that I’ve met along the way certainly had an influence but mostly it’s a matter of art awareness and choices made.

3- Where do you find the inspiration to create your projects? Are they modifiers of urban space?

Inspiration? Maybe creativity? At any rate, it’s an instinct to create, triggered by what we imagine and experience. So music, other artists, architecture, design, nature, literature… many factors. Every sort of interaction, every new piece of art changes the way we perceive.

4- What does Street Art represent for you in this constantly changing world?

It’s still, to some degree, a bastion of artistic freedom. In this regard, a lot depends on the artists themselves and their approach towards this sort of artistic outlet. For me, it’s an intriguing experiment and a kind of manifesto.

5- Do you think Street Art should be legal or should it continue to be a form of art pursued by the police? Have you ever had problems?

All art should be legal, just not everybody can do art. All my work is signed with my real name. I’m ready for the consequences and ensuing confrontations that may stem from someone’s ignorance and lack of awareness. Luckily, I’ve had no such issues yet.

6- How long does it usually take to prepare each project?

Cannot really say, it varies. In my case, the preparation phase is certainly a time-consuming process; and more important than the painting process itself.
